MEDITATION
Exodus 1:8-10
8 Now there arose a new king over Egypt, who did not know Joseph.
9 And he said to his people, “Look, the people of the children of Israel are more and mightier than we;
10 come, let us deal shrewdly with them, lest they multiply, and it happen, in the event of war, that they also join our enemies and fight against us, and so go up out of the land.”
MEANINGFUL APPLICATION TO LIFE
1. A new Pharaoh
a. This is not unexpected.
b. The Pharaoh in the days of Joseph had shown him great favour.
c. This new Pharaoh did not recognize Joseph for his contribution in the past.
2. A new policy issued by the Pharaoh
a. His analysis of the presence of the children of Israel in Egypt.
i. There was a huge number of them living in Egypt.
ii. They were “mightier” than Egypt.
iii. This was a political ploy rather than necessarily true.
b. A “shrewd policy” needed.
i. To stop them from multiplying.
ii. This was one of the plans the new Pharaoh proposed to his administration.
c. He stoked fears.
i. The “fear” that the children of Israel could join their enemies.
ii. The “fear” that they could fight the Egyptians effectively.
iii. The “fear” that they would then leave Egypt.
d. These were all politically motivated plans.
i. The children of Israel had never been a threat to Egypt.
ii. They had settled into Egypt very well and had prospered over the years.
