"Yet the land shall be desolate"

Text: Micah 7:13

THE PRESENT REALITY

The present reality however remained grim and dark. The Babylonians would come and they would destroy Judah.

“Yet the land shall be desolate
Because of those who dwell in it,
And for the fruit of their deeds.”
Micah 7:13

1. “Yet the land shall be desolate”

a) This was also uttered with certainty.
b) The land was a reference to Judah.
c) The land of Israel, the northern kingdom had already been destroyed by Assyria in 722 BC (2 Kings 17).

2. Desolation

a) The rulers would be taken captive to Babylon.
b) Many others would go into captivity with King Jehoiachin.
c) 2 Kings 24 described the deportation of many Jews to Babylon.
i) The Queen mother
ii) The princes
iii) The officers (courtiers) [2 Kings 24:12]
d) 2 Kings 25 described further the destruction of Judah.
i) King Zedekiah’s children were killed in front of his eyes.
ii) His eyes were then blinded (2 Kings 25:7).
iii) He and many others were chained and sent to Babylon.
e) The very poor were left behind in the country (2 Kings 25:12).

3. “Because of those who dwell in it”

a) They had been rebellious.
b) They had been stubborn.
c) They had been hard-hearted.
d) They had been impudent (Ezekiel 2:4-7).

4. “And for the fruit of their deeds”

a) They were utterly corrupt (Micah 7:2-3).
b) Their widespread sins had brought about this angry judgment from the Lord!
