"The faithful man has perished from the earth"

Text: Micah 7:2

A SAD REALITY

Much as Micah missed the first-ripe fruits of summer, a greater sense of sadness was experienced.

“The faithful man has perished from the earth,
And there is no one upright among men.
They all lie in wait for blood;
Every man hunts his brother with a net.”
Micah 7:2

1. “The faithful man has perished from the earth”

a) The faithful man could have died
i) Because of age.
ii) Because of illness.
iii) Because of evil that prevailed.
b) His absence was greatly felt.
i) He would not be there to stand up for the truth.
ii) He would not be there as one who stood up for the poor and needy.

2. “And there is no one upright among men”

a) It is always hard to find upright people.
b) It takes years for a person to be confirmed and established as an upright person.
c) The loss of upright people would be sorely felt.

3. A grim new scenario was described:

a) “They all lie in wait for blood”
i) The soul of the nation had changed drastically for the worse.
ii) People plotted to kill.
iii) Killing was almost common-place.
iv) This was the new and grim reality in the land that had forsaken God and righteousness.
b) “Every man hunts his brother with a net”
i) The word “brother” simply means a fellow-citizen.
ii) They were all descendants of Abraham.
iii) There should have been a strong sense of kinship with each other.
iv) In the new scenario, a person would think nothing of hunting a brother as a hunter would hunt for birds.
