ADDRESSING THE CITY OF JERUSALEM

Jerusalem was the capital of the Kingdom of Judah. The city was meant to be holy and faithful to God. But it had become grossly sinful and degenerate. The Lord had to address it firmly.

“The LORD’S voice cries to the city-
Wisdom shall see Your name:
‘Hear the rod!
Who has appointed it?'”
Micah 6:9

1. “The LORD’S voice cries to the city”

a) This phrase is similar to a number of texts in the book of Proverbs.

b) There Wisdom is depicted as one whose voice is heard in the streets.

i) “Wisdom calls aloud outside;
She raises her voice in the open squares.”
Proverbs 1:20

ii) “She cries out in the chief concourses,
At the opening of the gates in the city
She speaks her words.”
Proverbs 1:21

2. “Wisdom shall see Your name”

a) God was speaking to Jerusalem through His prophets.

b) The following prophets ministered about the same time.

i) Isaiah

ii) Hosea

iii) Micah

c) Wisdom would enable people

i) To hear the voice of the Lord.

ii) To see the Lord’s name.

3. “Hear the rod! Who has appointed it”

a) The rod refers to:

i) Correction and chastening.

ii) The threat of being conquered by the Babylonians was the rod of the Lord.

b) Meaning of the phrase: “Hear the rod”

i) To give heed.

ii) To learn the necessary lessons.

c) “Who has appointed it”

The answer was obvious! It was the Lord who had appointed the rod of Babylon!
