"Out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel"

Text: Micah 5:2

A PROFOUND ANSWER TO THE THREAT OF ENEMIES

The Lord’s answer to the threat of enemies was truly profound! This text deserves careful analysis.

“But you, Bethlehem Ephrathah,
Though you are little among the thousands of Judah,
Yet out of you shall come forth to Me
The One to be Ruler in Israel,
Whose goings forth are from of old,
From everlasting.”
Micah 5:2

1. A prophetic word was given

a) An army requires a Commander-in-Chief.
b) God would raise up a special Leader who would lead the nation under threat of war.
c) The birthplace of the One who was destined to lead Israel.
d) He would come from Bethlehem Ephrathah.

2. Bethlehem

a) It was also the birthplace of King David.
b) His father was a Bethlehemite (1 Samuel 16:1).

3. “Though you are little among the thousands of Judah”

a) There were thousands of little villages and cities of Judah literally.
b) Bethlehem Ephrathah was one of the smallest of towns.
c) Not just by size but also by public opinion.

4. “Yet out of you shall come forth to Me the One to be Ruler in Israel”

a) It seemed unlikely that Bethlehem Ephrathah could produce a significant individual.
b) Yet David would rise up to become King of Israel.
c) God would raise up a special Person who would arise and become the Ruler in Israel.
d) What seems impossible to man would be made possible by an Almighty God.

5. “Whose goings forth are from of old, from everlasting”

a) The future Ruler would not be like David at all.
b) He would be far greater.
c) He was already in existence from “everlasting”.
d) This Ruler obviously was no ordinary mortal being.
e) This description highlights the fact that He is of Divine essence.
