"Do not prattle"

Text: Micah 2:6

OPPOSITION TO THE PROPHETS OF GOD

There was strong opposition to the prophets of the Lord God. The following text gives us a glimpse of almost typical treatment of these faithful servants of God.

“‘Do not prattle,’ you say to those who prophesy.
So they shall not prophesy to you;
They shall not return insult for insult.”
Micah 2:6

1. “‘Do not prattle,’ you say to those who prophesy”

a) The word “prattle” has demeaning nuances.
i) Foolish chattering
ii) Meaningless words
iii) Simple-minded people “prattle”
b) There was no regard for the prophets of God.
i) This was an insult to the servants of God.
ii) Their messages were dismissed as irrelevant.
iii) The prophets of God were opposed strongly.

2. “You say to those who prophesy”

a) Prophets were the servants of God.
b) They stood up against those who were pursuing wickedness.
c) They stood up against wicked rulers and priests.
d) The prophets were sometimes violently oppressed.

3. “So they shall not prophesy to you”

a) Since the prophets of God are muzzled.
b) Since they are so greatly opposed.
c) They would have no ministry anyway.
d) They shall not prophesy to the people, as the people had demanded.

4. “They shall not return insult for insult”

a) The prophets of God were insulted time and again.
b) They were ridiculed for serving the Lord as His messengers.
c) But they will not return insult for insult.
d) They would not lose their dignity as the servants of God by behaving like the wicked in the land.
