"Against this family I am devising disaster"

Text: Micah 2:3

GOD’S RESPONSE TO INIQUITY

The wicked people in Israel sinned with impunity. They felt that they could get away with any crime they committed, because the civil authorities could not touch them. They had not factored in the fact that God was the ultimate Judge and Lord.

“Therefore thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, against this family I am devising disaster,
From which you cannot remove your necks;
Nor shall you walk haughtily,
For this is an evil time.'”
Micah 2:3

1. “This is an evil time”

a) When violence and oppression prevailed.
b) When the law seemed ineffective.
c) When perpetrators of evil deeds could escape the long arm of the law.

2. “Therefore thus says the LORD”

a) The LORD God Himself would override the civil authorities.
b) He Himself, would judge the wicked.

3. The solemn decree of the LORD

a) “Behold, against this family I am devising disaster”
i) In general, this is a reference to Israel; God would bring disaster to the nation.
ii) In particular, this is a reference to the wicked and iniquitous perpetrators.
iii) God declared that He would be against the wicked and He would punish them accordingly.
b) “From which you cannot remove your necks”
i) This hinted at the way in which the wicked had gotten away with doing evil.
ii) They should have been executed or severely punished for their wicked deeds.
iii) But time and again, they had somehow managed to “remove their necks” from being hanged.
iv) Not this time though, for God’s justice would be upheld and the wicked punished accordingly.
c) “Nor shall you walk haughtily”
i) Each time the wicked got away with their crime, they felt even more secure.
ii) They felt that they were above the law.
iii) Pride and arrogance resulted.
iv) They would walk away scot-free.
v) They walked away haughtily, despising the civil authorities for its powerlessness.
