Day 206 – Mark 9

“For whom is reserved the blackness of darkness forever.” 2 Peter 2:17b

WICKED TO THE LAST DETAIL

There was no denying the commanding voice of Jesus! The demon was compelled to obey. With great vehemence, and for the last time, the demon afflicted the boy he had possessed.

“Then the spirit cried out, convulsed him greatly,
and came out of him. And he became as one dead,
so that many said, ‘He is dead.'”
MARK 9:26

1. The tormented cry of the demon

The demon may have caused the boy to be deaf and dumb, but when he was forced to leave the boy, he cried out in torment!

2. One last hurtful act

Knowing that he was not only going to be evicted, but that he was no longer allowed to return to the boy, the demon afflicted the boy with a fearful fit of convulsion.

3. Forced out

The demon was finally evicted. The long stay in the boy was over. The demon was no longer in control. He had no power to resist the authority of Jesus.

PERSISTENCE OF UNBELIEF

As the boy lay still on the ground, many thought that he had died. They said as much, ‘He is dead.’ There is no mistaking the persistence of unbelief in the hearts of many.

a) They must have thought that the demon had won; he had slain the boy.
b) They must have also thought that Jesus had failed; since the boy appeared to be dead.

DISMISSING UNBELIEF

Jesus knew better! He went to the boy, who must have been exhausted because he was so greatly convulsed by the demon. He was sleeping!

“But Jesus took him by the hand and lifted him up,
and he arose.”
MARK 9:27

1. To the astonishment of the crowds

They must have been astonished at this miracle. Their astonishment however did not mean that they had a deeper faith.

2. The gratitude of the father and the boy

The father must have been absolutely delighted to see his son restored whole. His faith in God had been blessed. The Lord Jesus had indeed shown tremendous compassion and power, in response to his little faith. How beautiful everything looked now!
