Mark
2 Peter 2:8 "For that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their unrighteous deeds."
Day 189 – Mark 8
“For that righteous man, dwelling among them, tormented his righteous soul from day to day by seeing and hearing their unrighteous deeds.” 2 Peter 2:8
SHOCK AND PROTEST
When Jesus had finished teaching, Peter responded with shock and dismay. He protested strenuously against what Jesus had just taught the Disciples.
“He (Jesus) spoke this word openly.
Then Peter took Him aside and began to
rebuke Him.”
MARK 8:32
1. Difficulty in accepting this teaching on suffering
Obviously, Peter struggled with this new teaching of Jesus! How could Jesus openly teach about His suffering and death! Was He not the Christ? How could the Messiah suffer such ignominy and death at the hands of the elders, chief priests and scribes?
2. Remonstrating with Jesus
Peter was so upset that he pulled Jesus aside and began to remonstrate with Him. This was the first time an outburst from one of the Disciples had taken place- and it came from Peter himself.
A SWIFT RESPONSE FROM JESUS
Jesus was not unprepared for this outburst from Peter. He knew and understood where Peter was coming from. He knew that all the Disciples felt the same way. Thus He had to address all of them, even though He spoke to Peter directly.
“But when He had turned around and looked at
His disciples, He rebuked Peter, saying,
‘Get behind Me, Satan! For you are not mindful
of the things of God, but the things of men.”
MARK 8:33
1. Satanic Involvement
Who had caused Peter to burst out and rebuke Jesus? Who had caused Peter to reject the teaching of Jesus concerning suffering? Jesus saw the hand of Satan!
2. Not mindful of the things of God
Satan was certainly not mindful of the things of God. And this teaching of suffering was from God Himself!
3. Mindful of the things of men
Peter was somehow influenced subtly by Satan. His focus was “on the things of men”.
