Day 167 – Mark 7

“Knowing that I shortly must put off my tent, just as our Lord Jesus showed me.”
2 Peter 1:14

GREAT HUMILITY DISPLAYED

The Syro-Phoenician woman was not taken aback by what Jesus said. She was not disturbed in the least. She refused to be deterred. In abject humility, she gave forth this reply.

“And she answered and said to Him,
‘Yes, Lord, yet even the little dogs under the table
eat from the children’s crumbs.'”
MARK 7:28

1. Addressing Jesus as Lord

In calling Jesus “Lord” the Syro-Phoenician woman acknowledged the following things:-

a) The Superiority of Jesus
This term “Lord” was not commonly used. The emperor himself may be addressed as “Lord”. Common folks would never be addressed in this manner. The Lordship of Jesus was recognized and embraced.
b) The Inferior position she had
What right does a woman like her have to exercise as she approached Jesus? The woman appreciated that she had no rights she could claim as she approached the Lord.

2. The little dogs under the table

The Syro-Phoenician woman did not dispute Jesus’ use of the term “dog”. She applied it to herself humbly. She compared herself to one of the little pet dogs some people kept in their homes. These little dogs were not given the choicest food from the table, but they were still given something… “crumbs”.

3. Begging for crumbs

The words employed came from the depths of her genuinely humble heart. She asked humbly for crumbs from the table of the Lord Jesus. She would not dare to ask for anything more than mere crumbs!

A REMARKABLE FAITH COMMENDED

Jesus must have liked her response. Without further ado, He uttered the following gracious words to the Syro-Phoenician woman. For her remarkable strong but humble faith, her request was granted. The power of the demon was broken from that very hour.

“‘For this saying go your way;
The demon has gone out of your daughter.’
And when she had come to her house, she found
the demon gone out, and her daughter lying on the bed.”
