Day 162 – Mark 7

“For if you do these things you will never stumble…” 2 Peter 1:10

IF ANYONE HAS EARS TO HEAR, LET HIM HEAR

From time to time, Jesus would utter this statement. Every time He makes this statement, one can be sure that what He has taught would require a number of things:-

1. There is a deeper level of meaning that must be figured out

a) There is the surface meaning.
b) But there is also a deeper level of meaning that must be thought through.

2. The responsibility of understanding

a) This is placed on the shoulders of the listener.
b) The individual must use his ears as they were intended.

QUERIES FROM THE DISCIPLES

The Disciples must have tried to figure out what Jesus sought to teach. They made it a point to check with their Teacher the full significance of what He taught.

“When He had entered a house away from the crowd,
His disciples asked Him concerning the parable.”
MARK 7:17

1. The privilege of being the Disciples of Jesus

They had the privilege of being able to ask Jesus further questions! It was a privilege that they did not take for granted.

2. A parable to the Disciples

Jesus did not actually phrase His teaching in the form of a formal parable at this juncture. However, the intended meaning was as difficult to decipher as one of His parables. Thus the Disciples asked Him to explain this “parable” in greater depth.

SAD CONTRAST

If the Disciples did not fully understand Jesus, how much did the multitudes comprehend? A sad contrast must be noted.

1. The multitudes seemed to have asked no questions.

2. The silence of the scribes and Pharisees would be understandable.

a) They must be seething with rage.
b) Jesus had once again gotten the better of them! They were publicly humiliated!
