Day 133 – Mark 6

“And be clothed with humility…” 1 Peter 5:5c

THE CALLING OF THE TWELVE

Jesus had anticipated well in advance that He would one day require the assistance of others in His ministry. In preparation, He called Twelve men who became special disciples. Let us recall the following text.

“And He went up on the mountain and called to Him
those He Himself wanted. And they came to Him.
Then He appointed twelve, that they might be with Him
and that He might send them out to preach.”
MARK 3:13-14

THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE MINISTRY OF THE TWELVE

The Twelve were privileged indeed. The following may be highlighted:-

1. They were especially taught (“trained”- Cf. Mark 4:11, 34).

2. They had the privilege of being in the Presence of Jesus daily.

3. They had many special and personal experiences where they learned deep lessons of faith (Cf. Mark 4:36-40)

The time had now come to be sent out as the special emissaries of Jesus.

“And He called the twelve to Himself,
and began to send them out two by two,
and gave them power over unclean spirits.”
MARK 6:7

THE NEXT PHASE OF TRAINING

The Disciples were now expected to do things on their own. The would have to serve without the immediate Presence of Jesus.

1. Two by Two

a) The disciples would have to learn how to work together as a pair.
b) They would at least have each other’s company in ministry.
c) They must recall and put into practice all they had learned from Jesus.

2. Power over unclean spirits

a) Jesus anticipated resistance from Satan and His forces.
b) He did not want His disciples to be caught unprepared and then be defeated.
c) He empowered His disciples so that they would not be defeated by the unclean spirits.
