Day 291 – Mark 14

“Now Peter and John went up together to the temple at the hour of prayer, the ninth hour.” Acts 3:1

THE LAST WEEK

Mark (and all the other Gospel writers) devoted much space tracing the last week of the life of the Lord Jesus Christ. All the Gospels noted the Triumphal Entry of Jesus into Jerusalem. Each Gospel writer then chose what he wished to include in his Gospel. (Thus you will find that each of the Gospels would feature different events of the last week of Jesus).

HOLY FEAST DAYS

All the Gospel writers included the celebration of the Passover Feast. Mark’s notation carried a sad element.

“After two days it was the Passover and
the Feast of Unleavened Bread.
And the chief priests and the scribes sought how
they might take Him by trickery and put Him to death.
But they said, ‘Not during the feast, lest there be an uproar
of the people.'”
MARK 14:1-2

1. The Significance of the Passover

a) This was instituted as an annual celebration for Israel (Cf. Exodus 12).
b) The keeping of the Passover was to remember the deliverance of Israel from bondage to Egypt.
c) God’s mighty hand of deliverance was to be remembered and celebrated.

2. The Significance of the Unleavened bread

a) This was celebrated over a week.
b) Israel was not to use yeast for the whole week when they made bread.
c) The spiritual emphasis was on the theme “holiness”.

3. The Sinister plot of the chief priests and scribes

a) These were the religious leaders of Israel.
b) They were plotting the death of Jesus on the eve of the celebration of their national religious feasts!
How much more incongruous could they become?
