For He is at my right hand that I may not be shaken. "Acts 2:25b"

Day 264 – Mark 12

THE DOCTRINE OF THE RESURRECTION

Jesus upheld the doctrine of the resurrection. He believed in the afterlife. He was not amused nor was He fazed by the sneer that was inherent in the hypothetical problem the Sadducees posed to Him. The reply to the Sadducees is found in the following text.

“For when they rise from the dead,
they neither marry nor are given in marriage,
but are like the angels in heaven.”
Mark 12:25

1. The flaws of the Sadducees
a) They wasted their time sneering at others.
b) Their time would have been better spent studying the Scriptures.
c) The thoughts of God would always be greater than that of man.

2. Why was the doctrine of the resurrection deemed impossible?
a) If the human mind could not fathom it, does it mean that God couldn’t construct it?
b) Why couldn’t there be a different way of life in God’s resurrection-world?

3. A Poser to the Sadducees
a) What if the realm of the spirit operated on a different set of rules?
b) What if in the next life, the resurrected were like angels?
c) What if the next life is NOT an extension of the present life?
d) What if the next life does not include the system called “marriage”

NO ANSWERS FROM THE SADDUCEES OR ANYONE ELSE

What Jesus taught was “new material” for everyone.
1. New for the disciples
2. Unheard of for the Sadducees
3. Staggering for the Pharisees whose focus was on traditions
4. Absurd abstraction for the Herodians
