Day 240 – Mark 11

“And said, ‘Men and brethren, this Scripture had to be fulfilled…” Acts 1:16a

PREPARATION TO RIDE INTO JERUSALEM

The two disciples had fulfilled their mission. There was just one more little detail to look into before they were ready to set out on their trip to Jerusalem.

“Then they brought the colt to Jesus
and threw their clothes on it, and He sat on it.”
MARK 11:7

1. The Disciples of course abstained from riding the colt.

a) Jesus had mentioned to the Disciples that no one had sat on this colt (Mark 11:2)
b) Their respect and love for Jesus would have ensured that they would give to Him the colt as He had originally described it.

2. Putting clothes on the colt

a) The usual way of helping to prepare a new colt to have its first rider.
i) It is not unusual to put a blanket (in this case, some clothes) on a colt that would take its first rider.
ii) The colt gets used to the idea of having something placed on its back.
iii) In time, the colt would accept the Rider as its Master.
b) A special way of expressing love for the Lord Jesus.
i) The clothes would make the ride to Jerusalem gentler for the Rider.
ii) This was an act of tender love for the Lord Jesus, that only those who were disciples would understand and appreciate.

3. Safe assumption that only Jesus rode into Jerusalem in this manner

a) The prophecy of Zechariah made no mention or provision for others to ride.
b) The two disciples were sent to fetch only one colt for Jesus to sit on.

NO MISUNDERSTANDING ALLOWED

The fulfillment of this powerful and poignant prophecy in Zechariah must be so carefully carried out, that no room for misunderstanding would be allowed. There was but One King, One Messiah … and there was just One Jesus.

The mood was set. Those who had come into Jerusalem earlier would be in a celebratory mood. Would they recognize Jesus as the One who was fulfilling Zechariah’s prophecy?
