Day 226 – Mark 10

“In which the heavens will pass away with a great noise, and the elements will melt with fervent heat…” 2 Peter 3:10b

AN EARNEST INQUIRER

Few questions are as important and relevant as this one raised up to Jesus.

“Now as He was going out on the road,
one came running, knelt before Him, and asked Him,
‘Good Teacher, what shall I do that I may inherit eternal life?'”
MARK 10:17

Even if we do a quick profile of this inquirer, we cannot but note the following good features. Let’s highlight them for easier reference.

1. He showed initiative

He came running to see the Lord Jesus.

2. He showed proper humility

He knelt before the Lord Jesus, out of deep respect for Him.

3. He showed good spiritual inclinations

He was vitally interested in the matter of having “eternal life”.

HIDDEN PROBLEMS

On the surface, this earnest inquirer seemed to be truly genuine. However, Jesus knew His heart. There were things hidden in his heart that must be addressed.

“So Jesus said to him,
‘Why do you call Me good?
No one is good but One, that is, God.'”
MARK 10:18

1. The fact that the earnest inquirer only called Jesus “Good Teacher”

a) This earnest inquirer did not recognize Jesus as the Messiah-Saviour.
b) He recognized Him only as a “Teacher” and a good One.

2. His hidden regard for himself

a) Jesus knew that the inquirer saw himself to be almost as good as Jesus.
b) The man only had an understanding of goodness in a relative sense.

3. God- Absolute goodness

Could the earnest inquirer understand and appreciate that man’s relative goodness cannot be compared to the Absolute Goodness which is one of the attributes of God?
