Text: Mark 1

"Who prophesied of the grace that would come to you." 1 Peter 1:10b

JESUS THE PREACHER AND TEACHER

Mark introduced Jesus as One who preached the Kingdom of God (Cf. Mark 1:14-15). Next, we read of Mark writing about Jesus as a Teacher of great authority.


“Then they went into Capernaum, and immediately
on the Sabbath He entered the synagogue and taught.
And they were astonished at His teaching, for He taught them
as one having authority and not as the scribes.”

MARK 1:21-22

1. What is Preaching?

a) It is the work of a herald.
b) The focus is that of proclaiming a message from God (The Sender of the herald).

2. What is Teaching?

a) It is the work of explaining.
b) After proclaiming the message, the herald may be asked to explain his message.

3. The synagogue

a) This institution was set up as a school.
b) The main task of the synagogue was to instruct from the Scriptures.

4. The scribes

a) These were the experts in the law of Moses.
b) The scribes were people who had dedicated their lives to copying the Scriptures.
c) They were very learned people and were capable of expounding the Scriptures.

5. The Teaching Ministry of Jesus

a) All were astonished at the skill and prowess of Jesus at expounding the Scriptures.
b) The one thing that stood out was the tremendous sense of authority that Jesus exuded as He taught the people from the Scriptures.
c) No scribe had ever been able to display such authority!
