Day 31

"Behold, I send My messenger"

Text: Malachi 3:1

A SPECIAL MESSENGER

Malachi was sent to proclaim a prophetic word concerning the coming of the Messiah.

“‘Behold, I send My messenger,
And he will prepare the way before Me.
And the Lord, whom you seek,
Will suddenly come to His temple,
Even the Messenger of the covenant,
In whom you delight.
Behold, He is coming,’
Says the LORD of hosts.”
Malachi 3:1

1. “Behold, I send My messenger, and he will prepare the way before Me.”

a) Firstly, the LORD would send a messenger.
b) Secondly, this “messenger” will fulfil a special task.
i) He will “prepare” the way.
ii) This word of prophecy would be fulfilled by John the Baptiser.

2. “And the Lord, whom you seek, will suddenly come to His temple, even the Messenger of the covenant”

a) The “Lord” mentioned here is not the LORD.
b) He will nevertheless be appropriately addressed as “Lord”.
c) This was the Messiah, the Anointed One that many seemed to look forward to.
d) He would “suddenly come to His temple”.
i) It would be an unexpected visit.
His visit would astonish everyone.
ii) Jesus came to the Temple one day and cleansed it (John 2:13-25).

3. “‘Even the Messenger of the covenant, in whom you delight.

Behold, He is coming,’ Says the LORD of hosts.”

a) The Messiah would also be called “The Messenger of the covenant”.
b) He would be “The Anointed One” (Messiah).
c) His Coming was prophesied by Malachi, and backed up by the LORD of hosts!
