"You have wearied the LORD with your words"

Text: Malachi 2:17

THE RESISTANT HUMAN SPIRIT

The messages of the prophet Malachi represented the Word of the LORD God of hosts. But every message delivered was met with strong resistance. There seemed to have been a war of words between the LORD and the returnees!

“You have wearied the LORD with your words;
Yet you say,
‘In what way have we wearied Him?’
In that you say,
‘Everyone who does evil
Is good in the sight of the LORD,
And He delights in them,’
Or, ‘Where is the God of justice?'”
Malachi 2:17

1. “You have wearied the LORD with your words”

a) This was what Malachi must have felt as he ministered to the returnees.
b) There were many sin problems that had to be addressed:
i) With the priests and the Levites.
ii) With the people.
iii) With the men who were divorcing their wives with evil intentions.

2. The resistance of the people

a) They retorted.
b) They raised questions.
i) “In what way have we wearied Him?”
ii) This was an expression of defiance.
iii) Whatever the answer may be, another retort would be made!

3. Popular opinions

These were popular opinions that seemed to have held sway.

a) “Everyone who does evil is good in the sight of the LORD, And He delights in them.”
b) “Where is the God of justice?”
