"He seeks godly offspring"
Text: Malachi 2:15
REVIEW OF THE COVENANT OF MARRIAGE
Many reasons are given as to why divorces took place. God gave reasons why divorce should not happen!
“But did He not make them one,
Having a remnant of the Spirit?
And why one?
He seeks godly offspring.
Therefore take heed to your spirit,
And let none deal treacherously with the wife of his youth.”
Malachi 2:15
1. Divorces
a) This would have to be done legally.
b) The priests and the Levites were involved:
i) They could have given good counsel.
ii) They could have helped the family to stay together.
c) But the divorce rate must have been alarming.
Hence, God sent this word to the nation through the prophet Malachi
2. Keeping the Marriage
a) Oneness
i) This describes an intact marriage.
ii) It was the LORD’s design for the covenant of marriage.
b) Remnant of the Spirit
i) The returnees were truly the “remnant”.
ii) The Spirit of God had been given to them (Isaiah 63:11).
c) Godly offspring
Godly offspring is more likely to come forth when the marriage is intact.
3. The human spirit
God warned against the wicked human spirit that practised treachery and sought divorce! The hard-hearted man cannot easily justify why he would divorce the wife of his youth!
