"I will send a curse upon you"

Text: Malachi 2:2

A STERN WORD OF WARNING

The LORD spoke to the priests and Levites candidly. He urged them to consider their ways. The manner of serving in the Temple was all wrong. Apparently, the word of the LORD fell on deaf ears. A stern word of warning had to be issued!

“‘And now, O priests, this commandment is for you.
If you will not hear,
And if you will not take it to heart,
To give glory to My name,’
Says the LORD of hosts,
‘I will send a curse upon you,
And I will curse your blessings.
Yes, I have cursed them already,
Because you do not take it to heart.'”
Malachi 2:1-2

1. “And now, O priests, this commandment is for you”

a) The focus is on “the priests”.
b) Usually, this would include the Levites, for they were assisting the priests.
c) This word was nothing less than “a commandment”.

2. A commandment

a) This was not a mere word of advice!
b) A commandment is to be heard carefully and taken to heart.

3. “To give glory to My name”

a) God’s name is to be revered.
b) It must never be despised at any time and in any way.
c) The honour and majesty of God’s name must be borne in mind at all times.

4. The warning of a curse

a) A curse is the opposite of a blessing.
b) Whatever “blessing” they may wish to have will turn into a dread curse instead.
c) This commandment from the LORD of hosts must be taken to the heart.
