"There would be mockers in the last time..."

DIFFERENT TERMINOLOGY

The Apostles of the Lord Jesus believed in His Second Coming. This period is described in different ways.

REMEMBERING APOSTOLIC TEACHINGS

Jude remembered what the Apostles of the Lord Jesus taught.

“How they told you that there would be mockers in the last time
who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts.”

Jude 18

1. “How they told you”

a) The pronoun “they” is a reference to the apostles of the Lord Jesus Christ.
b) The pronoun “you” is a reference to the readers of Jude (in the immediate context).

2. “That there would be mockers in the last time”

a) Jude was most likely citing the teachings of Peter (2 Peter 2).
b) “Mockers”
i) Jude has been describing the false teachers/ brethren and their activities.
ii) He adds another one; they will be mockers of those who follow the Lord.
c) “In the last time”
i) The time-context is this period where we await the Return of the Lord Jesus Christ.
ii) These can be very trying times.
iii) People think nothing of mocking the faithful followers of the Lord Jesus.
iv) This is a warning that is consistently sounded out by all the apostles.
d) “Who would walk according to their own ungodly lusts”
i) The word “walk” here is a very physical word.
ii) Jude is describing what they do in their daily life.
iii) They walk according to their ungodly lusts.
iv) They have no regard for God’s laws.
v) Their thoughts are entirely on giving in to whatever physical desires they feel.
