Day 3

"But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea"

Text: Jonah 1:4

THE RESPONSE OF THE LORD

Jonah had turned his back on the Lord! He refused to go to Nineveh. The response of the Lord is worth noting carefully.

“But the LORD sent out a great wind on the sea,
and there was a mighty tempest on the sea,
so that the ship was about to be broken up.”
Jonah 1:4

1. What were the options?

a) God could have dismissed Jonah as a disobedient servant.
b) He could have raised up another person to take Jonah’s place.
c) He could have severely disciplined Jonah for such blatant disregard of God’s command.
d) He chose to pursue Jonah instead.
i) For Jonah’s own sake.
ii) God does not really need Jonah’s help in any way.

2. “But the LORD sent out”

a) A great wind on the sea.
b) A mighty tempest.
c) The result:
i) The ship was in danger of being wrecked.
ii) The lives of everybody on board would be at stake.

But God was always in control of the storm

DIRECT INVOLVEMENT

God’s direct involvement is to be noted! Ponder Psalm 105. This Psalm focuses on the specific things that God did to bring about the fulfilment of His plans!

1. God sent a famine

a) He raised up Joseph.
b) The children of Israel ended up residing in Egypt to look after them.
c) Israel became a multitude while living in Egypt.

2. He raised up Moses

a) He caused many plagues to fall upon Egypt.
b) That His covenant promise to Abraham might be fulfilled.

God’s plans will never be thwarted by willful men. The Lord carefully orchestrates everything!
