"I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth"
Text: Joel 2:30
THE DAY OF THE LORD
From the prophecy concerning the outpouring of the Spirit of God, Joel wrote on the subject of the Day of the LORD.
“And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth:
Blood and fire and pillars of smoke.
The sun shall be turned into darkness,
And the moon into blood,
Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD.”
Joel 2:30-31
1. “And I will show wonders in the heavens and in the earth”
a) The Day of the LORD will be accompanied by “wonders”.
b) These would be “signs” that originate from the LORD.
c) These signs and wonders would take place:
i) In the heavens (the sky)
ii) In the earth
d) We are not informed as to what these wonders are.
2. “Blood and fire and pillars of smoke”
a) Three imageries were employed:
i) Blood
ii) Fire
iii) Smoke
b) What exactly these are we have not been informed.
i) But these would be known when they occur.
ii) They would be divine signs from the LORD.
3. “The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood”
a) “The sun shall be turned into darkness”
i) This would be an awesome wonder indeed!
ii) It is hard to imagine how the sun can become darkness.
b) The moon shall be blood-red.
4. “Before the coming of the great and awesome day of the LORD”
These would be mighty signs and wonders that cannot be ignored!
To ignore them would be sheer madness!
