"Rejoice in the LORD your God"

Text: Joel 2:23

A CALL TO REJOICE IN THE LORD

This was a call that would require faith in the Lord. It was given at a time of great trial and tribulation.

“Be glad then, you children of Zion,
And rejoice in the LORD your God;
For He has given you the former rain faithfully,
And He will cause the rain to come down for you-
The former rain,
And the latter rain in the first month.
The threshing floors shall be full of wheat,
And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil.”
Joel 2:23-24

1. “Be glad then, you children of Zion, and rejoice in the LORD your God”

a) This is a good and challenging call.
b) There is every reason to rejoice in the LORD God:
i) Being His children.
ii) Given the Covenant of the Lord.

2. “The former… and the latter rain”

a) The former rain is a reference to the autumnal rain.
b) The latter rain is the spring rain.
c) These rains must come from the Lord.
d) The Lord will faithfully do His part in giving the much-needed rain.
i) The crops would need the rains.
ii) If the rains did not come on time, the harvest would be severely affected.

3. “The threshing floors shall be full of wheat”

a) Wheat was one of the crops planted.
b) This is a promise of a great harvest.
c) The threshing floor is a reference to harvest time.
d) The phrase “full of wheat” would indicate the fulfilment of God’s promise of blessing.

4. “And the vats shall overflow with new wine and oil”

a) The vineyards would enjoy a rich vintage.
b) The overflowing vats would indicate a wonderful harvest.
c) The oil would come from olive orchards.

There was every reason to rejoice in the LORD God who can and will bless so abundantly!
