"This man does not deserve to die"
Text: Jeremiah 26:16
SIGNIFICANT SUPPORT FOR JEREMIAH I
There were the prophets, the priests who wanted Jeremiah to be condemned to death. Mercifully, there were supporters who stood up for Jeremiah.
“So the princes and all the people said to the priests and the prophets,
‘This man does not deserve to die.
For he has spoken to us in the name of the LORD our God.'”
Jeremiah 26:16
1. “The princes and all the people”
a) “All the people”
i) This phrase was used earlier (Jeremiah 26:7).
ii) It means “all the supporters”.
b) There were the prophets and the priests. They had their supporters.
c) There were the princes. They had their supporters too.
d) Their status as princes was to Jeremiah’s advantage.
i) They would be heard.
ii) Their words cannot be dismissed easily.
2. Their defense of Jeremiah
a) They rejected the demands of the prophets and the priests and their supporters.
i) The lives of these so-called prophets were anything but righteous.
ii) The priests were not much better in their lifestyle.
b) They did not believe that Jeremiah deserved to die
c) One reason was given.
i) He had spoken in the name of the LORD.
ii) If he had spoken the truth then he does not deserve to be executed.
iii) If he had been sent by the LORD, then he must be heeded.
