Day 24

"I will yet bring charges against you"

Text: Jeremiah 2:9

THE BRINGING OF A FORMAL CHARGE

To bring a charge against someone was to use “legal language”. The imagery is that of God as the plaintiff bringing a formal charge against Israel.

“‘Therefore I will yet bring charges against you,’ says the LORD,
‘And against your children’s children I will bring charges.'”
Jeremiah 2:9

1. The use of legal language

a) The imagery of a Court scene:
i) A judge
ii) The plaintiff
iii) The defendant
iv) Legal representatives if any
v) Charges are made against the defendant by the plaintiff.
b) This was the imagery employed.
i) A charge points to something very serious.
ii) All efforts at reconciliation had failed.
iii) What was left was to bring a formal charge against the defendant, Israel.
c) A charge is made:
i) When a law has been transgressed.
ii) Israel was charged with breaking the laws of God.

2. The Defendants

a) Israel as a nation is in mind here.
b) More specifically:
i) Generations
ii) Generation after generation is to be charged
c) Each generation has committed the same transgression.
d) There had been no repentance or remorse shown by the defendant nation.
e) Israel may make its defence against these charges laid by the Lord.
