"I brought you into a bountiful country"

Text: Jeremiah 2:7

THE PROMISED LAND

God had promised to bring the children of Israel into a land flowing with milk and honey. The Promised Land had always been described in the most positive way possible. But something went terribly wrong.

“I brought you into a bountiful country,
To eat its fruit and its goodness.
But when you entered, you defiled My land
And made My heritage an abomination.”
Jeremiah 2:7

1. “I brought you into a bountiful country”

a) It was God Himself who brought Israel into Canaan.
b) It was called “a bountiful country”.
i) The land yielded its best.
ii) It had enjoyed the Lord’s blessings.

2. “To eat its fruit and its goodness”

a) The land had yielded its fruit to the children of Israel.
b) The land was full of goodness.
i) It was fertile.
ii) It yielded fruit without too much difficulty.
c) The land was well-described in Deuteronomy 6.
i) “Large and beautiful cities” Deuteronomy 6:10
ii) “Houses full of good things” Deuteronomy 6:11a
iii) “Hewn out wells” Deuteronomy 6:11b
iv) “Vineyards and olive trees ” Deuteronomy 6:11c

3. “But when you entered, you defiled My land”

a) But when Israel entered the Promised Land, things began to go wrong.
b) Israel had “defiled (God’s) land.”
c) God had given clear instructions what Israel was to do when they entered the land.
d) They took for granted the Lord’s blessings.
e) They forsook the Lord and forgot all the words of warning given.
i) They had forgotten the LORD. Deuteronomy 6:12
ii) They did not fear God. Deuteronomy 6:13
iii) They went after other gods. Deuteronomy 6:14

4. “And made My heritage an abomination”

They did all that the Lord had admonished them not to do!

a) They had forgotten God. Deuteronomy 8:19a
b) They worshipped other gods and served them. Deuteronomy 8:19b
