Day 20

"What injustice have your fathers found in Me?"

Text: Jeremiah 2:5

SPEAKING CANDIDLY

God did not mince words when He spoke to Judah through Jeremiah. He had sent many prophets earlier. Some had spoken in proverbial style. Others had shared Visions from God. The response had been largely negative and dismal. This time round, Jeremiah spoke candidly to the people.

“Thus says the LORD:
‘What injustice have your fathers found in Me,
That they have gone far from Me,
Have followed idols,
And have become idolaters?'”
Jeremiah 2:5

1. “Thus says the LORD: ‘What injustice have your fathers found in Me?'”

a) The mention of the “fathers”.
i) Jeremiah was not addressing a recent problem.
ii) The problem dated way back to (their) “fathers”.
b) The mention of “injustice”.
i) What problems did the forefathers of Israel have with God?
ii) Was the problem “injustice?”
iii) Did Israel think that God had been unjust with them that they departed?
c) God had given good and clear laws which were meant to uphold justice.
Had Israel found flaws in God’s Laws that they now had to abandon them?

2. The estranged state

a) Israel had “gone far” from the LORD.
b) What were their reasons?
c) God was willing to listen to all that they had to say.
d) This estranged state had to be addressed.
e) The Lord had chosen this direct approach to deal with the problem.

3. Idolatry

a) Israel had forsaken God in favour of idolatry!
b) To go far from the Lord was bad enough, but idolatry too?
c) The nation had “followed idols” where once they had “followed” the Lord (Jeremiah 2:2).
