"Bear no burden on the Sabbath day"

Text: Jeremiah 17:21

THE LAW OF THE LORD

The Ten Commandments were given to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai (Exodus 20:1-17). These were basic Laws that God required of His people. They broke every single commandment deliberately!

“Thus says the LORD:
‘Take heed to yourselves, and bear no burden on the Sabbath day,
nor bring it in by the gates of Jerusalem;
nor carry a burden out of your houses on the Sabbath day,
nor do any work, but hallow the Sabbath day,
as I commanded your fathers.
But they did not obey nor incline their ear,
but made their neck stiff,
that they might not hear nor receive instruction.'”
Jeremiah 17:21-23

1. The Sabbath Law

a) This was the 4th Commandment.
b) This was highlighted as an example.

2. The Commandment explained

a) Take heed to yourselves:
i) This Commandment was to be taken seriously.
ii) It was to be applied individually.
b) What the Sabbath Law entailed I:
i) No burdened to be carried.
This is a reference to work or business.
ii) The Gate of the children of the people.
This was like the marketplace for the children of Judah.
iii) The Sabbath was just another busy market day for everyone.
c) What the Sabbath Law entailed II:
i) The Sabbath was to be hallowed.
ii) It was meant to be a day of rest for both work-animals and workers.
iii) It was meant for worship and ministry.

3. “But they did not obey nor incline their ear, but made their neck stiff, that they might not hear nor receive instruction”

a) The people’s response:
i) They did not obey.
ii) They did not even incline their ear.
b) The problem analysed:
i) They made their neck stiff.
ii) So that they might not hear.
iii) So that they might not receive instruction.
c) A deeper problem:
i) This was rejection of God and His Commandments.
ii) They deliberately refused to take heed to the Lord.
