"Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD"

Text: Jeremiah 17:7

A WONDERFUL CONTRAST

The Lord gave a wonderfully contrasting word to Jeremiah to meditate on and to proclaim. There are those who would not trust God, preferring to trust man. But there are those who would trust God fully. This word of comfort may be given to them.

“Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD,
And whose hope is the LORD.
For he shall be like a tree planted by the waters,
Which spreads out its roots by the river,
And will not fear when heat comes;
But its leaf will be green,
And will not be anxious in the year of drought,
Nor will cease from yielding fruit.”
Jeremiah 17:7-8

1. “Blessed is the man who trusts in the LORD, and whose hope is the LORD”

a) If trust in the LORD is established
b) And if hope in the Lord abides
c) This person would be greatly blessed by God.

2. This text is reminiscent of Psalm 1:3.

3. Features of blessing:

a) He shall be like a tree that is well-planted.
i) It is near “waters”.
ii) There will be adequate supply of water.
b) Which spreads out its roots by the river.

ii) The roots spread out to the rivers.
c) And will not fear when heat comes.
i) The tree does not need to fear the lack of rainfall.
ii) Or when there is strong summer heat.
d) But its leaf will be green.
i) Green leaves indicate a healthy tree.
ii) The tree continues to flourish.
e) And will not be anxious in the year of drought.
i) Drought brings anxiety.
ii) Many trees can die if the drought is severe.
iii) The man who trusts in God is like the well-planted tree. He does not need to feel anxious.
f) Nor will cease from yielding fruit.
i) The God-blessed tree will always be able to yield fruit.
ii) The man who trusts in God will also be blessed with fruitfulness.
