Day 174

"I will not pity nor spare nor have mercy"

Text: Jeremiah 13:14

SEVERE JUDGMENT

Nothing seemed to get through to the children of Judah. Another severe word of warning was spoken to the people in Judah.

“Therefore you shall speak to them this word:
‘Thus says the LORD God of Israel: ‘Every bottle shall be filled with wine.”
And they will say to you,
‘Do we not certainly know that every bottle will be filled with wine?’
Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD:
‘Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land—
even the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets,
and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—with drunkenness!
And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,”
says the LORD. ‘I will not pity nor spare nor have mercy, but will destroy them.'”
Jeremiah 13:12-14

1. “Therefore you shall speak to them this word: ‘Thus says the LORD God of Israel'”

a) The source of this word was to be traced to God Himself.
b) The message did not come from Jeremiah the prophet.
c) His enemies would not be able to blame him for preaching this strong word.

2. “‘Every bottle shall be filled with wine.’ And they will say to you, ‘Do we not certainly know that every bottle will be filled with wine?'”

a) The imagery of wine was chosen.
b) Every bottle shall be filled with wine. (The word “bottle” was a reference to wine receptacles. They did not have “bottles” in those days.)
i) It is doubtful the people understood what Jeremiah meant.
ii) The prophet was not speaking about literal wine.
c) The rejoinder from the people confirmed that they did not understand him at all
“Do we not certainly know that every bottle will be filled with wine?”
i) To have every bottle filled with wine was to describe a wealthy economy.
ii) The people sneered at Jeremiah for making a statement that they deemed so obvious, it was not significant.

3. “Then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD: ‘Behold, I will fill all the inhabitants of this land—even the kings who sit on David’s throne, the priests, the prophets, and all the inhabitants of Jerusalem—with drunkenness””

a) This was the actual message.
b) The filling of the bottles with wine was not the problem.
c) The problem was “drunkenness”.
d) Who would become drunk?
i) The kings
ii) The priests
iii) The prophets
iv) All the inhabitants of Jerusalem
All would have a drinking problem! This would spell great danger to the nation!

4. “‘And I will dash them one against another, even the fathers and the sons together,’ says the LORD. ‘I will not pity nor spare nor have mercy, but will destroy them'”

a) What would happen when people are roaring drunk?
i) They would fight each other.
ii) Even fathers would fight their own sons.
iii) In their inebriated state, they would be fighting each other mindlessly.
b) God’s judgment would be a very severe one.
i) There will be no pity, no sparing, nor mercy.
ii) They would end up destroying themselves.
