"A conspiracy has been found"

Text: Jeremiah 11:9

A SINISTER CONSPIRACY

The LORD had to explain to Jeremiah why there was such a resistance to the word that was preached. Jeremiah would not have been able to know this on his own.

“And the LORD said to me,
‘A conspiracy has been found among the men of Judah
and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem.
They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers
who refused to hear My words,
and they have gone after other gods to serve them;
the house of Israel and the house of Judah
have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers.”
Jeremiah 11:9-10

1. “And the LORD said to me”

a) This word of revelation was essential.
b) Jeremiah would not have understood otherwise.

2. “A conspiracy has been found among the men of Judah and among the inhabitants of Jerusalem”

a) A conspiracy had been found.
i) The men of Judah (possibly the leading men).
ii) The inhabitants of Jerusalem (residents in Jerusalem).
b) They had come to an agreement among themselves.
i) They would reject the prophets of God.
ii) They would continue with their idolatry.
iii) Idolatry was a lucrative trade.

3. “They have turned back to the iniquities of their forefathers who refused to hear My words, and they have gone after other gods to serve them; the house of Israel and the house of Judah have broken My covenant which I made with their fathers”

a) The first problem: Refusal to listen to God.
i) They had chosen to turn back to the former iniquities of their forebears.
ii) These had refused to hear God’s words.
b) The second problem: Idolatry.
i) They had rejected the Lord their God.
ii) They had gone after idols and chose to serve them instead.
c) The third problem: Breaking of the Covenant.
i) Both Kingdoms had done the same thing (Israel and Judah).
ii) They had broken the Sinaitic Covenant which had been made and confirmed by their forefathers (Exodus 25).
