"The LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth"

Text: Jeremiah 1:9

A SPECIAL DIVINE TOUCH

Jeremiah became one of the most significant prophets of God. In the opening chapter of his book, he recalled the commencement of his prophetic ministry. The following features were forever etched in his heart and mind.

“Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth,
and the LORD said to me:
‘Behold, I have put My words in your mouth.'”
Jeremiah 1:9

1. The Call of the Lord

a) This was clear.
b) Though awesome and humbling.

2. The Conversation with the Lord

a) Jeremiah’s feeling
i) There was some fear.
ii) There was little confidence.
b) God’s assurance
i) The Lord would be with the budding prophet.
ii) He will protect and deliver Jeremiah from the wicked enemies.

3. “Then the LORD put forth His hand and touched my mouth”

a) This was a special act of grace.
i) It expressed affection.
ii) It inspired confidence.
iii) It instilled calmness.
b) The mouth was symbolic.
i) Jeremiah would be God’s spokesman.
ii) He would learn how to speak confidently and skillfully.

4. “Behold, I have put My words in your mouth”

a) The most important thing was for Jeremiah to proclaim “God’s words”.
b) His words would be in Jeremiah’s mouth.
c) He would be a true prophet of God speaking in the name of the LORD.
