"Meditate on these things..."

Text: 1 Timothy 4:15

APPROPRIATE RESPONSE NEEDED

It is vital that we find an appropriate response to our study of the doctrine of the Word of God. If we were to have an intellectual response of appreciation, that would be woefully inadequate. Let us ponder the words of advice the Apostle gave to Timothy. Five essential things may be highlighted: –

“Meditate on these thing; give yourself entirely to them,
that your progress may be evident to all.
Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine.
Continue in them, for in doing this you will save
both yourself and those who hear you.”
1 Timothy 4:15-16

1. “Meditate on these things”

a) This is more than just mere reading of the Lord’s word.
b) Meditation requires focus and effort.
c) Both heart and mind must mull over the word of God deeply and prayerfully.

2. “Give yourself entirely to them”

a) There must be a whole-hearted effort.
b) There must be full concentration.

3. “That your progress may be evident to all”

a) There must of course be progress in knowledge.
b) Progress must be obvious and concrete.

4. “Take heed to yourself and to the doctrine”

a) One must be ever watchful.
b) Two areas are especially highlighted: –
i) Self
ii) Doctrine (Reference to the word of God that contains the teachings of the Lord.)

5. “Continue in them… you will save both yourself and those who hear you”

a) The word “continue” involves two things in particular.
i) To abide in all that Timothy had been taught.
ii) To abound in all the things that had been learned.
b) This will result in great blessings to Timothy (included in the idea of “salvation”).
c) It will also result in bringing about salvation to those who hear the word of God taught faithfully.
