"All Scripture is given by inspiration of God..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:16

A FOUNDATIONAL TRUTH-PRINCIPLE

One of the most important truth-principles about the Scriptures is this text that the Apostle Paul wrote in his epistle to Timothy.

“All Scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine,
for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness,
that the man of God may be complete,
thoroughly equipped for every good work.”
2 Timothy 3:16-17

1. “All Scripture”

a) This will include both the Old and New Testaments.
b) By application, this is a reference to the canonical books that make up the Holy Scriptures.
c) We have a total of 66 books.

2. “Given by inspiration of God”

a) The Holy Spirit is directly involved (2 Peter 1:20-21).
b) The word “inspiration” involves the following:-
i) He moves the hearts and minds of the writers.
ii) He guides them in their thoughts and deliberations.
iii) He allows them to write as they were able.
iv) He keeps them from writing wrongly.
v) Each book is kept from error.

3. Why the Scriptures were written

a) To profit the careful reader.
b) To provide doctrines (teachings).
c) To reprove the reader if he is wrong in his thoughts and deeds.
d) To correct the reader so that he may be right in his beliefs and in his life.
e) To instruct the reader so that he may lead a life marked by righteousness.

4. The ultimate goal

a) That the believer may become a true “man of God”.
b) That he might be complete (mature spiritually).
c) That he might be thoroughly equipped for every good work that he can do for the Lord and bring glory to His name.
