Text: Jeremiah 31:31

ANCIENT ISRAEL

Ancient Israel ended on a very dismal note. Both Israel and Judah failed to heed the words of warning of the faithful prophets of God.

1. Israel

a) The northern kingdom was destroyed by Assyria in 722 BC.
b) This was solemnly recorded in 2 Kings 17.
c) The reasons why Israel was destroyed were clearly listed.

2. Judah

a) The southern kingdom, Judah was destroyed by Babylon.
b) This was also solemnly described in 2 Kings 24-25.
c) Judah however would go into captivity for 70 years (Jeremiah 25:12).
d) After their 70 year exile they would then be allowed to return to rebuild Israel.

3. Ministering to those Living in Exile

a) The prophet Jeremiah continued to minister to those in exile (Jeremiah 29).
b) He preached precious messages of hope to those in exile.

THE HOPE OF THE NEW COVENANT

One of the most significant themes that Jeremiah preached about was that God would create a New Covenant (Jeremiah 31-33).

“Behold, the days are coming, says the LORD,
when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel
And with the house of Judah…
But this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel
after those days, says the LORD;
I will put My law in their minds, and write it on their hearts;
and I will be their God, and they shall be My people.”
Jeremiah 31:31, 33
