"The Holy Scriptures..."

Text: 2 Timothy 3:15

ANOTHER IMPORTANT TRUTH

The Apostle Peter was not the only person who held to a strong belief that the Scriptures were authoritative and significant. The Apostle Paul had the same conviction and shared the same faith.

“But you must continue in the things which you have learned
and been assured of, knowing from whom you have learned them,
and that from childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures,
which are able to make you wise for salvation through faith
which is in Christ Jesus.”
2 Timothy 3:14-15

1. “But you”

a) This is a reference to Timothy.
b) He was a spiritual son of the Apostle Paul (2 Timothy 2:1).

2. Strong admonition

a) To continue in the things which Timothy had learned.
b) Timothy was assured of the things that had been taught to him.
c) This assurance is further enhanced through knowing the people who had taught him.

3. “From childhood you have known the Holy Scriptures”

a) Paul makes a very clear reference to the word of God describing it as “the Holy Scriptures”.
b) They are distinguished from other types of literature.
c) Timothy had a Jewish mother and grandmother (2 Timothy 1:5).
d) They had carefully taught Timothy how to regard the Lord’s Word as “Holy Scriptures”.

4. What the Holy Scriptures can do for the diligent reader

a) The Scriptures can help a person become wise (Psalm 19:7-11).
b) They help a person to understand salvation.
i) Why we need salvation.
ii) How salvation may be obtained.
c) They help a person find faith (Romans 10:17).
i) The Scriptures can help a person understand the importance of faith.
ii) They help a person to grow his faith (1 Peter 2:2).
iii) They form a strong foundation for faith (Matthew 7:24-25).
d) The Scriptures help us find faith in the Lord Jesus Christ.
