"The hand of the LORD was against them..."

Text: Judges 2:15

THE LAW OF THE COVENANT

The Law of the Covenant provided for the fact that God could chastise Israel if it broke the commandments of God.

“And the anger of the LORD was hot against Israel.
So He delivered them into the hands of plunderers
who despoiled them; and He sold them into the hands
of their enemies all around, so that they could no longer
stand before their enemies. Wherever they went out,
the hand of the LORD was against them for calamity,
as the LORD had said, and as the LORD had sworn to them.
And they were greatly distressed.”
Judges 2:14-15

DEADLY CONSEQUENCES

The consequences of forsaking the Lord had already been forewarned (Deuteronomy 27-28). The following may be highlighted: –

1. Israel was plundered.

2. Enemies despoiled them.

3. Israel could not stand against their enemies.

4. Calamity was the order of the day.

5. The people were greatly distressed.

THE MERCY OF THE LORD

The mercies of the LORD were extended to Israel again and again. He gave to Israel deliverers who were called “Judges.”

“Nevertheless, the LORD raised up judges who delivered them
out of the hand of those who plundered them.
Yet they would not listen to their judges,
but they played the harlot with other gods, and bowed down to them.
They turned quickly from the way in which their fathers walked,
in obeying the commandments of the LORD; they did not do so.”
Judges 2:16-17

1. “Judges”

a) They were needed to deliver Israel out of their troubles.
b) But the people did not listen to the judges.
c) All they wanted was deliverance but they still kept worshipping the gods of their enemies!

2. The spiritual state of the children of Israel

a) They turned to idolatry.
b) They had rejected the way of their fathers and had refused to obey the commandments of God.
