"We have the prophetic word confirmed..."

Text: 2 Peter 1:19

BATTLING FALSE TEACHINGS

The Apostle Peter found himself facing false doctrines that threatened the Church. Peter was forewarned that he would soon die as a martyr of the Lord Jesus Christ (2 Peter 1:14). He wanted to write a word that would help the church to be steadfast and true to the Lord. He wanted to give to the church a lasting legacy of faith.

“Moreover I will be careful to ensure that you always have
a reminder of these things after my decease.
For we did not follow cunningly devised fables when we made known to you
the power and coming of our Lord Jesus Christ,
but were eyewitnesses of His majesty.

And so we have the prophetic word confirmed,
which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place,
until they day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts.”
2 Peter 1:15-16, 19

1. “We did not follow cunningly devised fables”

This is an important truth to remember.

2. “Eyewitnesses of His majesty”

a) Peter wrote as an eyewitness.
b) The Apostles bore strong witness of the majesty of the Lord Jesus Christ.
c) In this particular text Peter wrote about how he and two other apostles witnessed the Transfiguration of Christ (Matthew 17:1-13).

3. “And so we have the prophetic word confirmed”

a) The faith of the Apostles was confirmed.
b) They had heard the voice of the Lord God.
c) They had seen the Lord Jesus wonderfully transfigured.

4. “Which you do well to heed as a light that shines in a dark place”

a) Faith in the Lord may well be compared to light.
b) Without faith our life may indeed be described as “a dark place”.

5. “Until the day dawns and the morning star rises in your hearts”

a) This is a beautiful description of how our faith in the Lord must keep growing.
b) Our initial faith may be described as dawn breaking.
c) There is still some darkness that must be dispelled.
d) Our faith must keep growing till the sun comes up fully and all is bright.

Let us be deeply challenged to build a faith that is well-founded in the Lord and in the Scriptures!
