"He wrote them on two tablets of stone."

Text: Deuteronomy 4:13

DIVINE AUTHORSHIP

One of the clearest statements about Divine authorship may be found here in this text.

“So He declared to you His covenant
which He commanded you to perform,
The Ten Commandments;
and He wrote them on two tablets of stone.”
Deuteronomy 4:13

1. “So He declared to you”

a) This is a reference to the spoken word.
b) God spoke to the children of Israel at Mount Sinai (Exodus 20).

2. “His covenant which He commanded you to perform”

a) The context of God speaking to the children of Israel is “His covenant”.
b) There were laws that His covenant-people must take heed of and perform.

3. “The Ten Commandments”

a) These were the core commandments of the Covenant-law.
b) All the other laws were built around these Ten Commandments.

4. “And He wrote them on two tablets of stone”

a) This is a clear statement that God is the Author of The Ten Commandments.
b) It is also a very clear statement that God personally wrote these Commandments.
c) It lends great significance to the words “It is written”.

THE ORAL AND THE WRITTEN WORD

God is the Author of both the Oral and Written Word. They are identical.

1. The significance of the oral word

a) To inspire fear of the Lord.
b) To instruct.
c) To affirm faith that there is a living God who speaks to His people.

2. The significance of the written word

a) No matter how powerful and awe-inspiring an oral word may be, its effects do not last very long.
b) The problem does not lie with God but with man.
c) Hence the written word.
i) It is meant to be studied carefully.
ii) It is meant to be referred to constantly.
