"Now the LORD had said to Abram..."

Text: Genesis 12:1

ORAL TRADITION

The earliest means of communication may be called “oral tradition”. This worked fine for a very long time. Think of the patriarchal days where the main means of communication was “oral tradition”.

1. “Abraham”

a) He was called.
b) He was given a special promise from the Lord.
c) A covenant was established for Abraham by the Lord (Genesis 12-25).
d) There wasn’t a whole lot to communicate to Isaac, his heir.

2. “Isaac”

a) The Lord revealed Himself personally.
b) The covenant with Abraham was ratified (Genesis 21-27).

3. “Jacob”

a) He had a twin brother.
b) But he was profane and did not value spiritual and eternal matters.
c) Jacob was the one who would carry the line of Abraham.
d) The Abrahamic covenant was ratified with him too (Genesis 28-50).

JOSEPH AND THE CHILDREN OF ISRAEL IN EGYPT

Joseph was sold by his brothers and ended up in Egypt as a slave. By the grace of God he rose to become the right hand man of the Pharaoh. He went on to help establish Israel in the land of Egypt.

More than four hundred years had passed and the children of Israel had become slaves in Egypt. God’s prophetic word to Abraham was being fulfilled (Genesis 15).

ADDING TO THE ORAL TRADITION

It was now obvious that “oral tradition” would now not be fully adequate. God raised up a special servant who would play a very significant role in the history of Egypt. Moses would be entrusted to play a number of important roles.

1. He would be the deliverer that God would use to take Israel out of the land of Egypt.

2. He would be the leader who would lead Israel for forty years in the wilderness.

3. He would be the one God would choose to teach Israel His commandments.

“Then the LORD said to Moses,
‘Come up to Me on the mountain and be there;
and I will give you tablets of stone,
and the law and commandments which I have written,
that you may teach them.'”
Exodus 24:12

THE LAWS OF GOD

Moses would play a significant role in teaching Israel about the laws God Himself had written!
