"No other foundation..."

Text: 1 Corinthians 3:11

AN EXAMPLE OF ONE WHO HAD LAID HIS FOUNDATIONS WELL

The Apostle Paul was an example of one who had laid a strong foundation! The following text makes this very clear.

“According to the grace of God which was given to me,
as a wise master builder I have laid the foundation,
and another builds on it. But let each one take heed how he builds on it.
For no other foundation can anyone lay than that which is laid,
which is Jesus Christ.”
1 Corinthians 3:10-11

1. “I have laid the foundation”

a) This is a reference to the work that Paul did.
i) In the lives of individuals.
ii) In the work of the church.
b) Paul understood what Jesus said.
i) Foundations are necessary!
ii) He followed through what Jesus had taught.

2. “No other foundation… that which is laid, which is Jesus Christ”

a) This confirms what the Lord Jesus had taught (Matthew 7:24-25).
b) The place of the Lord Jesus as the foundation must be established!

3. “According to the grace of God which was given to me”

a) The grace of God is a fundamental doctrine.
i) It is by grace that we have salvation at all.
ii) Grace must be applied in the growth and development of our faith.
b) This grace is available to all.
c) The issue is whether we apply grace as consciously as the Apostle Paul did.

4. “As a wise master builder”

a) This word in Greek is where we get the English word “architect”.
b) Paul saw himself as a spiritual architect.
c) Wisdom and grace were carefully and successfully applied.
d) Hence, his own life and the churches he founded were able to become strong and prominent (e.g. Thessalonians, Philippians etc.).
