"The princes of Judah"

Text: Hosea 5:10

MINISTRY TO ISRAEL AND JUDAH

Hosea ministered to both Israel and Judah. He was direct with both nations. He showed no partiality.

“The princes of Judah are like those who remove a landmark;
I will pour out My wrath on them like water.”
Hosea 5:10

1. “The princes of Judah”

a) This is a reference to those who belonged to the royal family of the ruler.
b) A general description of the princes:
i) They were of the “upper class”.
ii) They were far wealthier.
iii) They had status and enjoyed special privileges accorded to those born to royalty.
iv) They had good and direct access to the king.
v) They wielded significant influence in society.

2. “Like those who remove a landmark”

a) Landmarks demarcated property boundaries.
b) The law was supposed to protect the rights of property owners.
c) To remove a landmark was another way of describing people who robbed others of their property.
i) They may have used the law wrongfully to obtain property that belonged to someone else.
ii) They may have used force to obtain what they desired.
iii) The poor in the land would have suffered the most.

3. “I will pour out My wrath on them like water”

a) God’s wrath
i) God had every right to be angry.
ii) This law of protecting land rights came from Him.
iii) Moses was the law-giver who taught Israel to respect property rights (Deuteronomy 19:14).
b) Like water
i) God’s wrath would be like the rain that comes down to the earth.
ii) The sin of removing landmarks was quite extensive.
iii) The princes of Judah would feel the wrath of God as clearly as they would see water poured out.
iv) The royal family would not be exempted from Divine judgment.
