"Therefore the land will mourn"

Text: Hosea 4:3

DEEP AND PAINFUL CONSEQUENCES

There were severe consequences when all the systems of the nation fall apart. Deep and painful were the experiences of all who dwelt in Israel.

“Therefore the land will mourn;
And everyone who dwells there will waste away
With the beasts of the field
And the birds of the air;
Even the fish of the sea will be taken away.”
Hosea 4:3

1. “Therefore the land will mourn”

a) The land is a reference to the following:
i) The inhabitants of the land.
ii) The physical land itself.
iii) All the things and people that the land used to support.
b) The consequences
i) They were not anticipated.
ii) Thus, nobody was prepared for the dire consequences.
c) The mourning of the land
i) Sighing with grief.
ii) Fearful of worse things to come.
iii) Stunned by the fact that no one seems to have a solution.

2. “And everyone who dwells there will waste away”

a) The rich and the poor are affected adversely.
b) The royal family and the common people had to face harsh realities.
c) Everyone will waste away without hope in sight.

3. Environmental problems will follow:

a) The beasts of the field
b) The birds of the air
c) The fish of the sea
d) All will be adversely affected. All related economies would also falter and fail.

CONSEQUENCES THAT COULD HAVE BEEN AVOIDED

These could have been avoided. The state of affairs at the present, if unaddressed, will lead to the destruction of the nation. If only the nation had not turned its back on the LORD! The nation could still come back to the LORD to plead His mercy and grace to restore the nation.
