Hosea
Day
Day 28

"I will make a covenant for them"

Text: Hosea 2:18

A NEW COVENANT IN VIEW

How wonderful and gracious the LORD God is to offer a new covenant. The old Covenant (Exodus 24) was severely broken.

“In that day I will make a covenant for them
With the beasts of the field,
With the birds of the air,
And with the creeping things of the ground.
Bow and sword of battle I will shatter from the earth,
To make them lie down safely.”
Hosea 2:18

1. “In that day I will make a covenant for them”

a) This word looks beyond the return of Israel back to their homeland.
b) It is best to look at other references to the “new covenant” mentioned in other prophecies.
i) Isaiah 59:16-21
ii) Jeremiah 31:31-40

2. The New Covenant

a) God will bring redemption to His people (Isaiah 59:16-21).
b) He will come as the Redeemer (Isaiah 59:20).
c) He will put His words in the mouth of the redeemed (Isaiah 59:21).
d) He will personally write His law in the hearts and minds of the redeemed (Jeremiah 31:33).

3. Other features highlighted in Hosea

a) This covenant will include the following:
i) The beasts of the field
ii) The birds of the air
iii) The creeping things of the ground
b) It will also involve the causing of cessation of war.
i) The bow and the sword are symbols of war.
ii) They will be broken.
iii) Swords would be turned into plowshares (Isaiah 2:4c).
iv) Spears would be converted to pruning hooks (Isaiah 2:4d).
v) The art of warfare would not be learned anymore (Isaiah 2:4e).

4. “To make them lie down safely”

The peace that God would give to the redeemed would be extensive. Safety will be ensured for His people.
