Day 22

"I will destroy her vines and her fig trees"

Text: Hosea 2:12

WARNING OF DESTRUCTION

God had sent many prophets to teach Judah and Israel. But the people from both nations rejected the messages of the prophets! There was only one course left to take.

“And I will destroy her vines and her fig trees,
Of which she has said,
‘These are my wages that my lovers have given me.’
So I will make them a forest,
And the beasts of the field shall eat them.”
Hosea 2:12

1. The physical blessings of life

a) “The earth is the LORD’S, and all its fulness” (Psalm 24:1).
b) This was a basic understanding that Israel should have known
c) There should have been the following responses: –
i) The giving of thanks
ii) The blessing of God’s name
iii) Grateful worship
iv) Proclamation of the Lord’s goodness and grace
d) Many of the Psalms were written to acknowledge God’s blessings (Psalms 103, 145 etc.).

2. “I will destroy her vines and her fig trees”

a) God has the right
i) To bless.
ii) To withhold blessing.
b) He also has the right
i) To destroy the vines and the fig trees.
ii) Israel did not seem to comprehend this basic truth.

3. “Of which she has said, ‘These are my wages that my lovers have given me'”

a) Israel expressed belief that her idols gave them the physical blessings.
b) The word “lovers” is a reference to the idols Israel worshipped.

4. “So I will make them a forest, and the beasts of the field shall eat them”

a) God will withdraw His blessings.
b) Israel would be at the mercy of their enemies.
c) They would be like a vulnerable forest and defenseless against the beasts of the field.
