"I will uncover her lewdness"

Text: Hosea 2:10

UNCOVERING OF ISRAEL’S WICKEDNESS

Israel had practiced deception for years on end. It had been unfaithful to the Lord and it would now be exposed for all to see.

“Now I will uncover her lewdness in the sight of her lovers,
And no one shall deliver her from My hand.”
Hosea 2:10

1. “Lewdness”

a) In modern day language this word suggests “sexual immorality”.
b) But in the ancient days, the word “lewdness” had many other connotations.

2. “I will uncover her lewdness”

a) The word “uncover” is to be carefully understood.
b) Uncovering the lewdness of Israel had the following connotations:
i) The ignorance of Israel.
ii) The foolishness of the wise men and scribes.
iii) The wickedness of the nation.
iv) The villainy of the people.
v) The wickedness of the rulers.
vi) The unfaithfulness of the congregation.

3. “Her lovers”

a) This is a reference to the allies of Israel.
b) They had been taken in by the deception of Israel.
c) They had been fooled by the hypocrisy of the people.
d) God would expose Israel in all its wicked sinfulness.

4. “No one shall deliver her from My hand”

a) God would deliver Israel to Assyria.
b) None of her allies would be able to deliver Israel.
c) The promises of Israel to reward its allies would be empty ones.
d) When God had removed all its wealth, Israel would have nothing to offer its allies.
e) The fate of Israel lay in God’s hands.
f) Israel would not be able to deliver itself from the imminent threat from Assyria.
g) Israel had no one to blame for its predicament but itself for having forsaken the LORD!
