"The LORD God of hosts"

Text: Hosea 12:5

THE GOD WHO SPEAKS TO HIS PEOPLE

The children of Israel sought many idols who never said a word to them. He reminded the people that the LORD had always spoken to His people, since the days of the patriarchs.

“That is, the LORD God of hosts.
The LORD is His memorable name.”
Hosea 12:5

1. God had revealed Himself to Abraham

a) I am Almighty God (Genesis 17:1 El Shaddai)
b) He spoke to him on numerous occasions (Genesis 12, 15, 17, 18, 22)

2. God revealed Himself to Moses too

a) He would reveal Himself as “LORD” (Exodus 6:3).
b) This would be His “covenant name” that Israel may make reference to when they called on Him.

3. “The LORD God of hosts”

a) The word “hosts” refers to army of God.
b) He has a huge army made up of angelic beings (2 Kings 6:16-17).
c) This title was meant to do the following:
i) Inspire confidence
ii) Instill courage

4. “The LORD is His memorable name”

a) He is the LORD who had established a Covenant with Israel (Exodus 6:4).
b) The LORD would take Israel as His people (Exodus 6:7).
c) He is the LORD their God who delivered them (Exodus 6:7).
d) He is the LORD who gave them their land (Exodus 6:8).

5. Memorable name

a) His name is indeed memorable.
b) Each time Israel called upon His name sincerely (2 Chronicles 7:14-15):
i) The LORD would hear from heaven.
ii) He would forgive if there was true repentance.
iii) He would even heal their land.
iv) He would remain faithful to His covenant promises.
v) His eyes and ears would be attentive to the cries of His people.
