Day 118

"I will chasten them"

Text: Hosea 10:10

THE CHASTISEMENT OF THE LORD

Both Israel and Judah were under an illusion that they would not be chastised by the LORD no matter how they lived. They were sadly mistaken!

“When it is My desire, I will chastise them.
Peoples shall be gathered against them
When I bind them for their two transgressions.”
Hosea 10:10

1. “When it is My desire”

a) The word “desire” in this text must be carefully understood.
b) The following nuances are to be noted:
i) God’s intention
ii) His timing
iii) His plan
iv) His will (“wish” or “desire”)

2. “I will chastise them”

a) Discipline
b) Punishment
c) Judgment

3. “Peoples shall be gathered against them”

a) The Assyrians
They would conquer Israel, the Northern Kingdom in 722 BC.
b) The Babylonians
They would conquer Judah in 586 BC.

c) These enemies would do the work of chastising Israel and Judah.

4. “When I bind them for their two transgressions”

a) Israel and Judah would be literally “bound”.
i) On their way to captivity in Assyria and Babylon.
ii) Some would remain bound in prison.
b) Two transgressions
i) Both Israel and Judah transgressed the Lord’s commandments terribly.
ii) Another way of reading the text would be to understand that their transgressions took place in both countries.

Their transgressions which were severe resulted in chastisement that was appropriate to their sins!
